The makers of Wensleydale cheese have struck a deal to supply its waste whey to a local energy plant which can produce enough renewable biogas to heat 4,000 homes.

“The whole process of converting local milk to premium cheese and then deriving environmental and economic benefit from the natural by-products is an essential part of our business plan as a proud rural business,” said David Hartley, managing director at Wensleydale Creamery.

Once the biogas has been captured, the leftovers can be fed on to neighbouring farmland to improve local topsoil quality.
